On December 13, 2011, two Senegalese street vendors were shot and killed by a far-right extremist in the Piazza Dalmazia market in Florence. The attacker then shot and wounded three more Senegalese traders in the San Lorenzo market, before killing himself as police closed in. The shootings added to a growing list of race-related attacks in Europe over the past ten years, including notable incidents in Sweden, Belgium, Norway and the UK.
