The Creationary Assemblage in Antonioni’s Red Desert and Zabriskie Point Antonioni, Deleuze, and the Creationary Assemblage, di Andrew Korn


Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni’s color films Deserto rosso (Red Desert, 1964) and Zabriskie Point (1970) register a great shift in the filmmaker’s attitude toward the developments of Western society in the second half of the twentieth century. Red Desert tells the story of Giuliana (Monica Vitti), a young middleclass woman who struggles to survive a case of neurosis in her rapidly industrializing city of Ravenna, Italy. In a number of interviews taken around the making of the film in mid-1960s Italy, Antonioni maintains a general acceptance of the capitalist development of Italian society occurring at this time, expressing his fascination with the ways modernity transforms individuals and their environment:
The lines and curves of factories and their chimneys can be more beautiful than the outline of trees, which we are already too accustomed to seeing. It is a rich world, alive and serviceable.
